History

Sinar Mas Land was founded in 1988 as a subsidiary of the Sinar Mas Group, originating from the merger of two prominent Indonesian developers: Bumi Serpong Damai and Duta Pertiwi. The company began its operations under the name Duta Pertiwi, quickly expanding into a key player in the Indonesian real estate market. Its initial focus was on residential projects, but it soon diversified into a variety of real estate sectors, including shopping centres, office buildings, hotels, industrial estates, and townships.

In 1989, Sinar Mas Land started the development of BSD City, a new township located in the Greater Jakarta area. BSD City was one of the earliest projects of its kind and later became one of the largest urban developments in Indonesia, covering an area almost half the size of Paris. This project marked a significant turning point for the company, as it laid the foundation for its future growth and recognition in the real estate sector.

The company continued its growth in the early 1990s with projects such as the ITC Mangga Dua shopping centre in 1989, which became a major retail hub in Jakarta. In 1991, Plaza BII (now known as Sinar Mas Plaza) won its first award, recognising its excellence in office space design. In 1993, the company expanded into industrial estates with the establishment of KIIC (Karawang International Industrial City), which was the first industrial estate in Indonesia to receive the ISO 9001:2000 certification for quality management.

In 1994, Duta Pertiwi became a publicly listed company on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, marking its transition to a larger scale of operations. By 1996, Sinar Mas Land had fully acquired the Kota Wisata development, a major township project in collaboration with Marubeni, L&H, and LG. Strategic partnerships played a key role in the company’s expansion. In 2013, Sinar Mas Land formed a strategic alliance with Hongkong Land for the development of Nava Park in BSD City. The company also began collaborating with global companies such as Mitsubishi Corporation, Itochu, Shimizu Corporation, and Amazon Web Services. These alliances supported the development of high-profile projects like the Digital Hub and the integration of smart city initiatives in BSD City.
