History

Hamptons International was established in 1830 by William Hampton, who began his career with a furniture shop on Cranbourn Street, London. Hampton was later joined by his sons George and William Powell, followed by his grandsons Harold, Fred, and Clarence. In 1869, the business expanded, creating new premises at 8 Pall Mall East and 1–3 Dorset Place (now Whitcomb Street). However, in 1890, a fire destroyed much of the firm’s records, prompting the move of the business to offices at 1 Cockspur Street. A limited company was then formed, with George Hampton as chairman and managing director. In 1900, the firm opened a satellite office on Wimbledon Common.

Throughout the early 20th century, Hamptons expanded by acquiring several firms, starting with James Coulson & Co of Lisburn in 1898. In the 1920s, the firm gained prominence with successful auctions, including the sale of the Michelham Collection in 1926. During this period, Hamptons was involved in major contracts, including the fitting out of prestigious buildings such as the RMS Queen Elizabeth and the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

In 1936, the firm moved to the former French embassy building on Arlington Street, London, and further expanded its offices in locations such as Kensington and Wimbledon. During the Second World War, the firm’s Pall Mall premises were destroyed by an incendiary bomb, and the business was forced to relocate. After the war, Hamptons continued to acquire more firms, including Storey & Co in 1940, and in 1950, it held an auction for the luxury liner RMS Aquitania’s fittings.

In 1986, discussions were held to purchase the business by Abaco Investments, which was completed in 1987. The company went through a series of acquisitions in the 1980s, including Christopher Rowland, Messenger May & Baverstock, and Levens. By 1990, Hamptons was acquired by Bristol and West Building Society, and it was later sold to Cluttons London Residential Agency (CLRA) in 1996.

In 2005, Hamptons was purchased by Wheelock Properties (Singapore) Limited, and later, in 2006, it was acquired by Emaar Properties for £104 million. The company was then bought by Countrywide in 2010, which eventually led to its integration into Connells Group following their acquisition of Countrywide in 2021.
