History

Derwent London plc traces its origins to the Derwent Valley Light Railway, which was established in 1913. The railway operated for several decades until its closure in 1981. In 1984, John Burns restructured the former operating company, Derwent Valley Holdings, to pivot towards property investment and development, marking the start of its journey in the real estate sector. At this time, the company began its focus on the London property market, initially targeting light-industrial buildings for refurbishment and repurposing into modern office spaces.

In 1999, Derwent Valley Holdings became part of the FTSE EPRA/NAREIT Developed Europe Index upon its launch, reflecting its growing presence in the property market. By the early 2000s, the company had already made notable acquisitions and was expanding its portfolio in London’s West End and City borders.

A significant moment in the company’s history came in 2007 when Derwent Valley Holdings merged with London Merchant Securities plc, a deal that effectively doubled the size of the business and resulted in the formation of Derwent London. The merger was considered a landmark deal in the property sector, earning praise for its strategic value. That same year, Derwent London converted into a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT), which further strengthened its position as a leading property investment and development company.
