About Far East Organization

Summary

Far East Organization is the largest private real estate developer in Singapore. It was founded in 1960 by Ng Teng Fong and today operates across Singapore, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Malaysia and Australia. The group has diversified interests in property development, retail, hospitality, and food and beverage. It owns three public-listed subsidiaries: Far East Orchard Limited, Yeo Hiap Seng Limited and Far East Hospitality Trust.

The company’s first residential project was 72 terrace houses at Jalan Pacheli, completed in 1962. In the 1970s and 1980s, it expanded into retail and office developments, including Far East Shopping Centre (1974), Lucky Plaza (1978), Far East Plaza (1983) and Claymore Plaza (1984). Its move into hospitality began in 1987 with the acquisition of Ming Court Hotel, later renamed Orchard Parade Hotel. Far East Orchard was established through a restructuring of this unit in 2012.

Over the decades, the group has introduced brands such as Inessence for luxury residences, Far East SOHO for integrated lifestyle living, and Oasia under its hospitality division. It also developed landmark projects such as Orchard Central (2009), The Scotts Tower, One Holland Village, and The Reserve Residences. Overseas, it expanded into Australia in 2013, launched The Fullerton Hotel Sydney in 2019, and opened Village Hotel Ariake Tokyo in 2020.

The organisation manages over 780 developments, has built 55,000 private homes in Singapore, operates more than 20 retail centres, close to 100 hospitality assets with 16,500 rooms, and about 20 F&B brands. In Australia, it holds a real estate portfolio exceeding AUD 2 billion.

History

Far East Organization, founded in 1960 by Ng Teng Fong, is Singapore’s largest private real estate developer. Its first residential project was 72 terrace houses in Jalan Pacheli, Serangoon Gardens, completed in 1962. This marked the company’s entry into the property development sector. In the 1960s, Far East Organization developed various residential projects, including Katong Seaview Palace and Watten Estate, and made significant strides in shaping Singapore’s early housing landscape.

In 1974, the company expanded into retail with the Far East Shopping Centre, located along Orchard Road. This was followed by a series of retail and office developments in the Orchard Road area, including Lucky Plaza (1978), Orchard Plaza (1981), Far East Plaza (1983), and Claymore Plaza (1984). These projects were among the first to incorporate modern amenities like covered pedestrian bridges and escalators.

In 1987, Far East Organization acquired a majority stake in Ming Court Hotel Limited, which owned the Ming Court Hotel, later renamed The Orchard Parade Hotel. The acquisition marked its first foray into the hospitality sector. In 1991, the company rebranded the hotel to Orchard Parade Hotel, which would later be renamed Orchard Rendezvous Hotel in 2018. In 2012, Orchard Parade Holdings was restructured into Far East Orchard, a subsidiary of Far East Organization.

The company made a significant move in 1995 by acquiring a majority stake in Yeo Hiap Seng, a Singaporean beverage company, marking its diversification into the food and beverage industry. In 2010, Far East Organization introduced its luxury development brand Inessence and followed this up with Far East SOHO, a brand focused on small office, small home (SoHo) developments, in 2011.

In 2012, Far East Organization listed the Far East Hospitality Trust on the Singapore Exchange, establishing a publicly traded entity for its hospitality arm. The company also expanded internationally, first entering the Australian market in 2013 through a series of acquisitions and partnerships with The Straits Trading Company and Toga Group. In 2019, Far East Organization opened The Fullerton Hotel Sydney, occupying the historic former General Post Office building.

Far East Organization continued to diversify its business portfolio by establishing new ventures like Store-Y (self-storage) and Agape Laundry (centralised commercial laundry) in 2017. In 2020, it expanded into Japan with the acquisition of Village Hotel Ariake Tokyo. Today, Far East Organization operates in Singapore, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Malaysia, Australia, and Japan, with a significant presence in real estate, hospitality, and retail sectors across these regions.

In the residential sector, Far East Organization has developed over 780 properties in Singapore, including more than 55,000 private homes. The company’s luxury residential developments are under the Inessence brand, which includes projects such as Alba, Boulevard Vue, and Skyline@Orchard Boulevard. Additionally, the Far East SOHO brand caters to integrated living, with notable developments like The Scotts Tower and The Siena.

Far East Organization also has a significant presence in the commercial and retail property market, with over 20 retail properties in Singapore, including key developments like Orchard Central, One Holland Village Mall, and Watertown in Punggol. The company owns more than 60 wholly-owned and strata-titled commercial properties, with a total net lettable area of 2 million square feet.

In hospitality, Far East Organization operates an extensive portfolio of over 90 properties across nine countries, including Singapore, Australia, Japan, and Europe. Through its subsidiary Far East Orchard Limited, the company manages several hotel brands, including Oasia, Quincy, Rendezvous, Village, Vibe, and Adina Hotels.

Far East Organization has also expanded its operations internationally. In Australia, the company has invested over AUD 2 billion in prime properties and development sites. Its presence in Japan began with the acquisition of Four Points by Sheraton Nagoya, marking its first hospitality investment in the country. Additionally, the company has made significant investments in the UK, focusing on purpose-built student accommodation, with more than 3,500 units in cities like Brighton, Bristol, and Sheffield.
