History

Foxtons Group plc was founded by Jon Hunt in 1981 in Notting Hill, London, as a two-person estate agency. The company initially focused on providing real estate services in the local area, with a commitment to offering a different approach to property sales and lettings. Over the years, Foxtons expanded its operations and gained recognition for its innovative strategies.

In 2001, Foxtons introduced the branded Mini cars, which became a signature of the company’s marketing efforts. The Minis helped Foxtons stand out in a competitive market, becoming an iconic symbol of the brand. The company continued to grow, and by 2007, Foxtons was acquired by private equity firm BC Partners for £390 million.

However, in 2009, BC Partners lost control of Foxtons after creditors restructured the company’s debt, leading to a shift in ownership. Foxtons then went public in 2013, with a flotation on the London Stock Exchange that raised £55 million from private investors. This marked a significant step in the company’s growth and its ability to access public capital markets.

In 2014, CEO Michael Brown stepped down for personal reasons, and Nic Budden, the previous COO, took on the role of CEO. Budden led the company until 2022 when he stepped down, and Peter Rollings took over as interim CEO. In September 2022, Guy Gittins was appointed as the new CEO, solidifying the company’s leadership for the future.

Foxtons has continued to expand, acquiring various other estate agencies, such as Ludlow Thompson in 2024 and STONES in 2022, further strengthening its market position. It also pioneered innovations in the rental industry, such as online tenancy management through its “My Foxtons” platform in 2018.
