Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. is an American multinational hospitality company that manages and franchises a broad portfolio of hotels, resorts, and timeshare properties. Headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, it was founded by Conrad Hilton in 1919 and is currently led by President and CEO Christopher J. Nassetta.

As of 31 December 2023, Hilton’s portfolio includes 7,530 properties with 1,182,937 rooms in 118 countries and territories. These comprise 51 owned or leased properties, 800 managed properties, and 6,679 franchised properties operated by independent owners under Hilton’s brand standards.

The company’s business model is primarily franchise-based, allowing it to focus on brand management and customer loyalty while franchisees handle daily operations and costs.

Hilton operates 22 brands across different segments of the hospitality market. These include luxury brands such as Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, Conrad Hotels, LXR Hotels & Resorts, and NoMad Hotels; lifestyle brands like Canopy by Hilton, Curio Collection, and Tapestry Collection; full-service brands such as Hilton Hotels & Resorts and DoubleTree; focused-service brands including Hilton Garden Inn and Hampton; all-suites brands like Embassy Suites and Homewood Suites; and vacation ownership brands such as Hilton Vacation Club and Hilton Grand Vacations.

The company’s guest loyalty programme, Hilton Honors, has about 195 million members worldwide, offering points and airline miles for stays within the Hilton network. Hilton also maintains regional offices in Memphis, Singapore, Dubai, and Watford, UK, to oversee operations across its global markets.

History

Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. was founded in May 1919 by Conrad Hilton, who purchased the 40-room Mobley Hotel in Cisco, Texas. Over the following years, he acquired additional hotels in Texas. In 1925, the Dallas Hilton became the first hotel to use the Hilton name, and in 1927 Hilton opened a hotel in Waco, Texas, which was the first to have air conditioning in public areas and cold running water.

In 1943, Hilton assumed management of the Roosevelt Hotel and purchased the Plaza Hotel in New York City, becoming the first hospitality company to operate across the contiguous United States. The company was incorporated in 1946 as Hilton Hotels Corporation and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1947, the Roosevelt Hotel became the first hotel in the world with televisions in rooms. That year Hilton also took on its first international property in Mexico, along with four hotels in Bermuda.

Hilton International was founded in 1948, and the Caribe Hilton in Puerto Rico opened in 1949. The Waldorf-Astoria in New York was purchased the same year. Expansion continued in the 1950s and 1960s with the first hotels in Europe (Madrid, 1953), Central America (Panama City, 1957), Canada (Montreal, 1958), Africa (Cairo, 1959), Oceania (Sydney, 1960), South America (Santiago, 1961) and Asia (Hong Kong and Tokyo, 1963). Hilton also pioneered innovations such as the first central reservations office, full air conditioning in all rooms, and the first airport hotel in 1959.

In 1964, Hilton’s international operations were spun off into Hilton International Co., creating two separate companies operating under the Hilton name in different territories. Hilton International changed ownership several times before becoming part of Hilton Group plc. The two companies entered a joint marketing agreement in 1997 to unify branding and reservations systems.

In 1999, Hilton acquired Promus Hotel Corporation, adding brands such as DoubleTree, Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn, and Homewood Suites. In 2005, Hilton Hotels Corporation re-acquired Hilton International for £3.3 billion, reuniting the domestic and international businesses.

In 2007, Blackstone Group acquired Hilton for $26 billion, appointing Christopher J. Nassetta as president and CEO later that year. The company moved its headquarters from Beverly Hills, California, to Tysons Corner, Virginia, in 2009. Following the 2008 financial crisis, Hilton restructured its debt in 2010.

Hilton returned to public trading on 12 December 2013, raising $2.35 billion in its second IPO. In 2016, Hilton announced the spin-off of its real estate and timeshare businesses, resulting in the creation of Park Hotels & Resorts and Hilton Grand Vacations in January 2017. By 2018, Hilton had become a fully independent, publicly traded company after Blackstone and HNA Group exited their holdings.

Recent developments include a February 2024 partnership with Small Luxury Hotels of the World and the April 2024 acquisition of a majority stake in Sydell Group, owner of NoMad Hotels, to expand the luxury lifestyle brand globally. Today, Hilton operates 22 brands across 118 countries and territories.

Hilton has repeatedly been ranked among the top employers globally. In 2025, it was named the No. 1 Best Company to Work For in the U.S. by Great Place to Work and Fortune for the second consecutive year, its 10th appearance on the prestigious list and fourth time at the top spot. The company has also been honoured as the World’s Best Workplace for at least eight consecutive years, most recently in 2024.

Furthermore, in 2024, Hilton was named Best Workplace for Women in the U.S. for the sixth year in a row and received top “Great Place to Work” rankings in numerous countries, including Austria, India, the Netherlands, the United States and others.

Hilton’s workforce recognition is bolstered by its internal commendation, the CEO Light & Warmth Award, granted in 2024 to 16 individuals and one team globally who embody the company’s values and purpose, as selected by its CEO.

On the social responsibility front, the Hilton Global Foundation earned recognition in PEOPLE’s 2024 “100 Companies That Care” list for meaningful community engagement, particularly through grants and initiatives such as installing water filtration systems in underserved regions.

Portfolio

Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. operates a diverse portfolio of approximately 24 hotel brands that serve a wide range of guest needs, from luxury travellers to budget-conscious visitors. The company manages more than 8,800 properties in over 139 countries and territories, offering in excess of 1.3 million rooms. Hilton continues to expand its presence globally, opening nearly three hotels per day, with the total number of properties reaching around 8,602 in recent figures.

Hilton’s portfolio is organised into several categories. In the luxury and premium segment, the brands include Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, Conrad Hotels & Resorts, LXR Hotels & Resorts, Signia by Hilton, and NoMad Hotels. In the lifestyle and curated collection segment, Hilton offers Canopy by Hilton, Curio Collection by Hilton, Graduate by Hilton, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, Tempo by Hilton, Motto by Hilton, and Spark by Hilton.

The full-service category comprises Hilton Hotels & Resorts and DoubleTree by Hilton. Focused service and midscale brands include Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton by Hilton, Tru by Hilton, and Spark by Hilton. The all-suites and extended-stay segment features Embassy Suites by Hilton, Homewood Suites by Hilton, Home2 Suites by Hilton, and LivSmart Studios by Hilton. Vacation ownership brands include Hilton Grand Vacations, Hilton Vacation Club, and Hilton Club.

Several individual brands have notable developments. Spark by Hilton, launched in 2023, is a premium economy brand designed mainly through the conversion of existing properties. As of 2025, it includes 130 hotels with 11,582 rooms, primarily franchised, and is expanding in the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, and India.

Canopy by Hilton, introduced in 2014 with its first property opening in Reykjavik in 2016, has grown to around 45 locations in 12 countries by 2024. Curio Collection by Hilton, launched in 2014 as the company’s first ‘soft brand’ of unique independent hotels supported by Hilton’s systems, had approximately 150 global locations by 2023. Tru by Hilton, launched in 2016, is a midscale brand targeting value-minded travellers with simplified designs and communal spaces; it had more than 178 properties in the early 2020s.

Hampton by Hilton, founded in 1984 and later acquired by Hilton, is one of the company’s largest midrange brands, with 3,000 hotels as of March 2024 and growing to 3,127 hotels with 350,606 rooms across about 40 countries and territories by May 2025.

This brand portfolio enables Hilton Worldwide to operate across the full spectrum of hospitality market segments, providing luxury, lifestyle, full-service, midscale, extended-stay, and timeshare offerings.
