As of 2024, Marriott has 36 brands and manages a network of 9,361 properties with 1,706,331 rooms in 144 countries and territories. Its portfolio covers multiple segments: luxury (e.g., The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, JW Marriott), premium (e.g., Marriott Hotels, Sheraton, Westin, Renaissance), select service (e.g., Courtyard, Fairfield, Aloft, Moxy), and extended stay (e.g., Residence Inn, Element, TownePlace Suites).

The company operates through a combination of management contracts, franchise agreements, and direct ownership. Of its total properties, 1,981 are managed by Marriott, 7,192 are franchised to independent operators, and 51 are both owned and managed by the company. It also runs 20 hotel reservation centres and offers a global loyalty programme, Marriott Bonvoy, enabling guests to earn and redeem points across its brands.

In addition to traditional lodging, Marriott’s portfolio includes serviced apartments, vacation ownership through Marriott Vacation Club, and partnerships with alternative accommodation providers such as Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy and Sonder.

History

Marriott International traces its origins to 1927, when John Willard Marriott and his wife Alice Marriott opened an A&W Root Beer stand in Washington, D.C. The business expanded to include food service and became known as Hot Shoppes. In the early 1930s, the company introduced drive-in service, and by 1932, operated seven Hot Shoppes in the Washington, D.C. area. Hot Shoppes, Inc. became a public company in 1953.

Marriott entered the lodging industry in January 1957 with the opening of the Marriott Motor Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. The second hotel, the Key Bridge Motor Hotel in Rosslyn, Virginia, opened in 1959 and operated until July 2021. In 1967, Hot Shoppes, Inc. was renamed Marriott Corporation. The company diversified, acquiring the Sun Line cruise line in 1972, which it owned until 1987, and opening two Marriott’s Great America theme parks in 1976 in California and Illinois, later sold in 1984.

In 1993, Marriott Corporation split into Marriott International, Inc., which managed and franchised properties, and Host Marriott Corporation (now Host Hotels & Resorts), which owned them. Marriott International introduced online reservations in 1995 and began acquiring luxury brands, starting with a 49% stake in The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company in 1995, followed by majority ownership in 1998. In 1997, it acquired Renaissance Hotels and the Ramada brand from Chow Tai Fook Group.

During the 2000s, the company faced legal disputes and sold certain brands, including Ramada in 2004. It became the first major U.S. hotel chain to ban smoking in its North American properties in 2006 and removed trans fats from its menus in 2007. It also expanded internationally, especially in Asia.

In 2015, Marriott acquired Delta Hotels and announced the acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide in 2016, creating the world’s largest hotel chain with over 5,700 properties and 30 brands. The company later acquired Elegant Hotels in 2019, Hoteles City Express in 2023, and announced the acquisition of Citizen M in 2025.

Marriott has also faced challenges, including data breaches in 2018 and 2020, legal actions over resort fees, criticism of animal welfare practices, and operational disputes. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, it introduced enhanced cleanliness protocols. Leadership changes included Arne Sorenson becoming the first non-Marriott family CEO in 2012, followed by Anthony Capuano in 2021 after Sorenson’s death.

In recent years, Marriott launched new brands such as StudioRes and Four Points Express, partnered with Sonder in 2024 to add 10,500 rooms, and continued expanding its portfolio across luxury, premium, select, and extended stay segments.

Marriott International has a diverse and extensive portfolio of brands, categorised into four main segments: luxury, premium, select service, and longer-stay and alternative accommodation.

In the luxury segment, Marriott offers some of its most high-end brands, including Edition, JW Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton (including Ritz-Carlton Reserve), St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, W Hotels, and The Luxury Collection.

The premium segment sits just below luxury in positioning and consists of Autograph Collection Hotels, Delta Hotels, Design Hotels, Gaylord Hotels, Le Méridien, Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Vacation Club, MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy, Renaissance Hotels, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts, Tribute Portfolio, and Westin Hotels & Resorts.

The select service category includes brands that provide a balance of quality and value. These are AC Hotels, Aloft Hotels, City Express by Marriott, Courtyard by Marriott, Fairfield by Marriott, Four Points by Sheraton, Four Points Flex by Sheraton (formerly Four Points Express), Moxy Hotels, Protea Hotels, SpringHill Suites, and Series by Marriott Bonvoy.

In the longer-stay and alternative accommodation segment, Marriott provides options aimed at extended visits and non-traditional lodging. This includes Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, Element, Homes & Villas by Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott Executive Apartments, Residence Inn by Marriott, Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy, StudioRes, and TownePlace Suites. These brands are designed to provide greater space and home-like amenities, serving business travellers on assignments, relocating guests, or those seeking more flexible accommodation options.

As of 2025, Marriott operates 37 distinct hotel and timeshare brands globally, continuing to expand its portfolio through acquisitions and new brand launches. In recent years, this has included the acquisition of CitizenM, a Dutch-based contemporary chain, to strengthen its presence in the affordable luxury and lifestyle sector. Marriott also introduced StudioRes, a mid-scale extended-stay brand targeted at budget-conscious travellers and remote workers.
